Will our community go the distance for St. Joe’s?

Hamilton, ON— This morning, a community of fundraisers came together to kick off this spring’s fundraising for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. With just six weeks to go until the Around the Bay Road Race, fundraising teams from the Hamilton community, hospital staff and departments, as well as this year’s fundraising Community Champion, Lu Cacioppo of Deloitte, showed their commitment to going the distance for St. Joe’s.

“Whether it’s delivering exceptional patient care today, or conducting research that leads to life-changing discoveries tomorrow, St. Joe’s is committed to going the distance for the health of our community every single day, ” shared Sera Filice-Armenio, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation’s president & CEO. “Now we’re challenging our community to fundraise and go the distance for St. Joe’s!”

This spring, by participating in two signature events – the Around the Bay Road Race in March and the Paris to Ancaster: A Ride for Research in April – St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation aims to raise $575,000 in support of patient care and research at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

Over the years, funds raised from Around the Bay and Paris to Ancaster have supported research in eye medicine, scleroderma, respirology and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The funds have also enabled the purchase of a laser to treat retinal disease, maternal fetal monitors so new moms and babies are kept safe, and diagnostic equipment for use in the Boris Family Centre for Interventional Radiology & Oncology.

This year’s Around the Bay Community Champion for St. Joe’s, Lu Cacioppo, shared that he and his team of colleagues and local business leaders aim to raise $100,000. “I’m going the distance for St. Joe’s by fundraising and walking the Around the Bay 5k so our community can continue to count on the expert Mental Health & Addiction Services St. Joe’s provides to those who need it most,” Lu shared. “St. Joe’s was there for our family, and now we are going to be there for St. Joe’s.”

Also at the event, Anna Lewis, Director of the Around the Bay Road Race, made a surprise $1,000 donation to Lu’s team saying, “it’s our hope that many others will be inspired to run, walk, fundraise or make a donation to St. Joe’s! It shows the true spirit of community, which is a huge part of the Bay Race.”

However you choose to go the distance for St. Joe’s this spring is up to you. You can raise funds as you walk or run the milder 5k ATB course or run the 30k. Or, you and your family can choose to cycle to the finish line of the P2A 20k family ride or take on the more challenging 40k or 70k bike race routes.
